About the Speaker

Jon Dybdahl, born in Oakland, California, and educated in Asia and America, has been a church pastor, evangelist, school founder, educator, writer, and translator. His career began at Pacific Union College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Theology in 1965. At Andrews University, he received both an M.A. (Systematic Theology, 1966) and an M.Div. (1967). In 1981, he was awarded a Ph.D. from Fuller Theological Seminary; his major study was the Old Testament, and his minor emphases were Missions and Semitic Languages. Following his study at Andrews University, he served the Northern California Conference as an associate pastor. In 1968, Jon and his wife were called to work in northern Thailand. During that time they became acquainted with and learned to love not only the northern Thais but also the Hmong and Karen hill tribes among whom they served. While there, they started an adult education program for hill tribe students. Later, they moved to Singapore, where Jon taught in the college and pastored the college church. They returned to the United States, and Jon accepted an appointment at Walla Walla College as Associate Professor and then as Professor of Theology until 1989. During another year of mission service he helped launch Mission College near Saraburi, Thailand (1989-1990); while there, he had two positions— Administrator/President and Professor of Theology. In 1990, Dr. Dybdahl returned to Andrews University and the Institute of World Mission/Department of World Mission. In 2002, he became president of Walla Walla College, where he serves currently. His professional publications include Old Testament Grace (1990) and Adventist Mission in the 21st Century (1999). In The Abundant Life Bible Amplifier Series, he is the author of Exodus (1994) and Hosea-Micah (1996). Dr. Dybdahl has been awarded the Zapara Award for Excellence in Teaching (1988), the ASDAL Literary Award for Non-Fiction Book of the Year (1990), and the Andrews University Award for Excellence in Teaching (1996-1997).
